AI IS RUINING ART

There are so many bands that we personally know that use AI to make their artwork. It feels to us as if musicians have lost a level of sincerity in their image, it’s not “punk” to use AI, and it’s not fair on actual, talented artists to use it to do all the work for you. Another thing we have noticed are local music venues using AI for posters and for promoting the gigs for bands. It’s their responsibility to support local artists, and using AI generated technology to show off these bands goes against everything they’re meant to be doing for our community.

Before AI, it was encouraged for musicians to either create art themselves or to find an artist to collaborate with, this created a sustainable relationship between ourselves and artists. Historically, music and the arts have supported each other and have often worked hand in hand, with a lot of the art you see on a daily basis being from records covers, or from the band posters you have hung up in your room.

Instead of using AI to make your imagery for you, pay a real hardworking artist to make something unique and personal to you and your band. Because of this rise of AI technology it feels like it’s only separated us, and it doesn’t help that the constant advertisement pushing AI has normalised it and has made it seem almost natural. We want you to reach out to artists near you so we can fix this relationship.

We think it’s so important to us as artists to not forget our roots and what gives our work importance in the first place.

To be fully clear, while it’s still not a positive thing, using AI tools from art softwares (e.g. photoshop) to help enhance a piece of work made by yourself is not the issue here. The issue is using entirely AI generated images and trying to pass it off as your own work that is ruining artist’s lively hoods, and thats what far too many bands we know are guilty of. Platforms like ‘chatgpt’ are not tools, they are services, you give the AI a prompt and it spews an image back at you. It’s lazy and thoughtless.

It doesn’t feel like our place to tell other bands what they should or shouldn’t do, but they know who they are. All we want is to inspire some kind of change in our community, and to make more people aware of this issue.
